Christmas 2020

Christmas lights are going up everywhere – it’s wonderful to see them shine brightly when darkness descends every evening. They joyfully pierce the blackness of the December nights.

Some people go to extraordinary lengths with their light displays, don’t they? You come around the corner in your car or on your evening walk and there in front of you is just a blaze of brilliant white and multicoloured lights all bringing a cheer to the dark and damp evenings.

All these various lights that bring Christmas cheer point to a far greater and more glorious light – a light that first shone in the world over 2000 years ago in a Bethlehem manger. This light is what Christmas is all about. This light is what the world was waiting for long before it came. This light is the Lord Jesus Christ, the God-Man.

He himself tells us that He is the light of the world. In the Bible which is God’s authoritative, full sufficient and only word to us we read in John 8:12, “Jesus spoke to them saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

This past year has indeed been a dark year for us all. Covid-19 has ravaged the world, our country and all our lives to one degree or other. The long shadow of death has hung heavily over us as we’ve seen the sad statistics on our TV’s or maybe sadly, experienced it first-hand as it has affected our families.

BUT, in all this darkness, the true message of Christmas still shines brightly. Jesus tells us He came into the world to bring life – the life that He brings is eternal life. Again, in the Bible in John 11:25 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though He die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.”

What amazing, encouraging, and hopeful words as we gear up for what is in many ways is an extraordinary Christmas. Those words come from the mouth of the One who is God’s gift to us. I trust this Christmas will be the one which you remember like no other, not because of Covid but because the light of God’s Christmas Gift to you, the Lord Jesus has shone in your heart.

May God bless you and your family this Christmas time. Merry Christmas everyone!
