Pastor Evan's Blog

Summer 2015

Well the election has come and gone. We’ve seen a number of high profile politicians lose their seats and with the loss of their seats, they’ve also lost their hopes and dreams. Many staunch supporters have had their allegiances dashed, whilst others have shared in the euphoria and exhilaration of the victors. The lead up to the election was full of claims and counter claims as to which party would be most eligible to govern. Various party manifestos were drafted which set out what each party was pledging to do if they were to be voted into power. Unfortunately, over the years, the electorate has become increasingly sceptical of politicians promises, with the result that they are reluctant to believe that what they hear will materialise. We have seen many broken promises and furthermore, laws have been enshrined on the statute books without a mandate from the British people.

Christians take comfort in the midst of this uncertainty in the knowledge that all authorities are only in power because God Himself has allowed them to be there! In Romans 13 verse 1 we read that, “there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” All governments and politicians bear a huge responsibility as they are God’s means of maintaining law and order and of looking after the needs of all citizens. The only way our leaders can do this successfully is if they follow the Supreme Leader’s (God’s) manifesto as it is set out in the Bible. Christians know that because God created us, He is best able to decide and instruct us on how our societies should function.

As people become members of political parties today and align themselves with their respective party’s policies, don’t you think it wise to become a member of God’s Kingdom? In order to belong to His Kingdom, you have to agree with His manifesto, the Bible. What’s so reassuring about that is that it has never changed, it has remained the same since the day it was finally completed. It tells you many things about God, yourself and how He wants you to live your life. As members of political parties need to agree to party policy to become members, so too God’s people need to agree to God’s requirements to become citizens of heaven.

To summarise those requirements, God’s manifesto tells you to: repent of your sin, trust in the Lord Jesus as your Saviour and Lord and strive with God’s help through His Spirit, to be faithful to His Word. If you undertake to trust the Lord Jesus, you too will then share in the benefits of belonging to His Kingdom.

As all politicians promise a bright new future if you vote for them, trusting in the Lord Jesus guarantees you the best possible future and that is a promise which will never be broken. Again it tells us in His manifesto, the Bible, this time in Revelation 21:3-4, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”

Just imagine that! No more problems with the environment, the NHS or immigration!

I hope you all have a great summer.

God bless
